![]() Based on their design, AGM batteries offer top-tier performance when driving in both hot and cold weather. The result is a car battery that performs infinitely better than traditional flooded or gel cell batteries. AGM batteries have fiberglass separators or glass mats that “absorb” the electrolyte solution inside the battery. Optima batteries feature an AGM or Absorbent Glass Mat design, a VRLA battery designed to support the higher electrical demands of modern cars and trucks. There are many types of car batteries, but there are two general classifications: Flooded battery (wet cell) and Valve Regulated Lead Acid or VRLA battery. Meanwhile, the signature Six-Pack spiral-wound design increases the plate surface area to deliver greater starting power. The spiral winding technique offers better vibration resistance and more efficient power output. Whereas conventional car batteries have flat and square lead plates, Optima batteries use a series of individual spiral-wound cells composed of two pure lead plates coated in lead oxide (these spiral cells look like a jelly roll). Optima batteries are available in three variants: RedTop, YellowTop, and BlueTop, and all share the same proprietary design. After the manufacturing plant was moved to Mexico there seems to be quality control issues. ![]() Optima offers a red-top with reversed posts, but if my measurements are correct, it won't fit into the plastic tray on the bottom of the well.Ī few years ago I ignored the reports of issues with Optima yellow top batteries. My battery is mounted securely with no movement at all.įWIW, I got mine from Batteries Plus about three years ago. When you're done, the fiberboard cover will not lay flat on top of it as it did with the original battery but that's probably the worst trade-off. If you use this method you'll have to bend the angle of the bar holder where it hooks on the outboard side a little and also do some final fitting on the length of the tubing to to get the holder bar to sit flat on top of the battery. I cut a 1.5-inch piece of metal tubing to thread the bolt through and take up the gap between the top bar holder and the nut on the floor of the trunk. I moved the battery bar holder up one notch on the outboard side and used 2-inch bolt on the inboard side. Optima's term is "reversed post."
